My plan for transport

For many people, the era of the Monday to Friday commute is over. Our public transport must change to reflect this new way of working, with ticketing that does not penalise those who work part time or only go to the office a few days a week. Our bus network is often too expensive, unreliable and geared towards journeys from home to town centres, while many who work or study in less central locations find it easier and cheaper to drive.
As Mayor I will;
  • Deliver on Steve Rotherham’s failed promise to introduce Bus Franchising.
  • Introduce flexible season tickets and 1 hour bus tickets, to make it easier and cheaper to make journeys that involve more than one bus.
  • I will build new stations on the Merseyrail Network, including reopening lines currently without passenger services and expand the number of accessible stations for people with disabilities.
  • Explore the idea of hybrid Tram Trains and how they can be used to bring rail services to greater parts of the region, including a link to John Lennon Airport.
  • Press for further electrification of our rail network.
  • Develop plans to reuse the Wapping Tunnel, enabling more services to be included in the Merseyrail network
  • Ensure a ferry continues to “cross the Mersey” with a zero emission replacement.
